Io Orihara: From Banking Star to Idol Dreamer

Io Orihara, a vibrant member of the idol group NightOwl, recently shared her incredible story of leaving a secure banking career to follow her dream of becoming an idol.

Her journey is one of courage, passion, and perseverance. In an exclusive interview with Weekly Bunshun, Io reflects on her life-changing decision and the challenges she faced along the way.

Q: Can you tell us about your life before joining NightOwl?
Io: I grew up in a strict but loving household. My parents always emphasised stability, so I followed a very traditional path. After university, I landed a job at a major bank, which seemed like the pinnacle of success. The salary was great, the hours were reasonable, and I had supportive colleagues. But deep down, I felt like I was living someone else’s life.

Q: What sparked your desire to become an idol?
Io: It all started during university when I attended an OLDCODEX concert at Zepp Namba. By chance, I was invited on stage to sing. The rush of performing in front of so many people was indescribable. That moment planted a seed in me, but I pushed it aside to focus on a “normal” career.

Q: Why did you decide to leave your stable job?
Io: For years, I tried to suppress my dream. But as time went on, I started experiencing anxiety and even physical issues. One day, on a crowded train, I felt so overwhelmed that I knew I couldn’t go on like that. I decided to quit and take control of my life.

Q: How did your family react to your decision?
Io: My mother was worried, but she eventually came around. My father, however, was furious. He didn’t speak to me for about three or four years. It was painful, but I understood his perspective. Thankfully, he’s now one of my biggest supporters.

Q: What was it like transitioning to the idol world?
Io: It was tough. The idol industry is highly competitive, and I had no prior experience. But I was determined. I auditioned for NightOwl and gave it my all. Once I joined, I realised that my time in banking had prepared me in unexpected ways, like staying organised and managing stress.

Q: What’s been your most rewarding moment as an idol?
Io: Every time I see fans enjoying our performances, I feel so fulfilled. One fan told me that my journey inspired them to chase their own dreams. Moments like that make all the struggles worth it.

Q: You mentioned Zepp Namba was significant for you. What are your goals now?
Io: Performing at Zepp Namba is my ultimate dream. It’s where my journey began, and I want to return there, not as an audience member but as a performer. It would feel like coming full circle.

Q: Any advice for people hesitant to follow their dreams?
Io: It’s never easy to leave stability behind, but your happiness matters. Take small steps towards your dream and trust yourself. Even if it’s scary, the freedom of living authentically is worth it.

Io’s story is a testament to the power of following one’s heart. Now thriving as an idol, she’s proof that it’s never too late to rewrite your destiny. With her eyes set on Zepp Namba, Io Orihara is ready to inspire others to break free from societal expectations and live their truth.
