MBC May Cancel Gayo Daejejeon After Plane Crash

MBC Considers Cancelling Gayo Daejejeon

MBC has announced that it is deliberating whether to cancel this year's Gayo Daejejeon, originally scheduled for 31 December, following the tragic plane crash at Muan International Airport.

In a statement released on 29 December, MBC confirmed the cancellation of the 2024 MBC Entertainment Awards due to emergency news broadcasts.

“Tonight’s broadcast at 8:30 PM will not air. We ask for your understanding,” the network said.

The company added that discussions are ongoing regarding the fate of the upcoming Drama Awards and Gayo Daejejeon.

The decision comes after a horrific accident involving Jeju Air Flight 7C2216.

The plane crashed during a landing attempt, colliding with the runway wall. Of the 181 passengers and crew, only two have been confirmed as survivors.

As the nation mourns, MBC faces mounting pressure to prioritise coverage of the tragedy over entertainment programmes. Further updates on the broadcasts will follow soon.
