Yagi Azuki Becomes First Kenkyuusei Centre in AKB48

AKB48 has made history by selecting Yagi Azuki, an 18th-generation Kenkyuusei, as the centre for their 65th single, set to release on 22 April 2025.

This marks the first time in the group’s 20-year history that a trainee has been chosen for such a role.

Azuki Yagi, born 22 March 2005 in Tokyo, joined AKB48 in April 2023.

Her meteoric rise began with a solo performance of "Kokkyo no Nai Jidai" at the Nippon Budokan, showcasing her commanding stage presence and dynamic dancing.

She achieved Senbatsu selection in under a year with "Karakon Wink."

Her acting debut in the 2024 drama Stardust Telepath further solidified her prominence.

In December, Yagi Azuki was featured in the Shonichi performance of the "Koko Kara Da" stage and entrusted with the solo song, "2gatsu no Mermaid."

Speaking on her historic appointment, Yago Azuki admitted she felt overwhelmed yet determined.

"I want this single to show the brilliance of AKB48's current members. It’s an honour to lead during the 20th-anniversary year."

Yagi Azuki’s selection as centre symbolises a new era for AKB48, with high hopes resting on her shoulders as the group's next-generation ace. Fans eagerly await her upcoming performance.
