The newly released 2024 Tencent Entertainment White Paper provides a detailed review of the trends and transformations in China's entertainment sector.
This year was marked by challenges and progress, covering five key areas: film, television dramas, variety shows, music, and celebrities.
Launched at the Beijing Music Industrial Park during the Tencent Entertainment Annual Gala 2024, the report reveals that China's film sector generated a total box office revenue of 39.54 billion yuan, a 28% decrease from 2023.
Comedy film "YOLO" emerged as the top-grossing movie, earning 3.45 billion yuan. Meanwhile, micro-dramas surged with a market size of 50.44 billion yuan, up 34.9%, surpassing film revenues.
Television dramas shifted focus to quality, airing 236 series, 33 fewer than in 2023.
Popular shows like "Blossoms Shanghai" and "Joy of Life 2" innovated with genre fusions. Realistic themes opened opportunities for middle-aged actors.
The music sector saw 729 million online users, with offline concerts thriving through 3,500 events. Smaller cities embraced the "music plus tourism" trend, boosted by local policies and sponsorships.
Variety shows saw a slow recovery, with online formats increasing by 11% and satellite TV shows stabilising.
Genres like travel, competition, and music remained dominant. The gala presented 27 awards, honouring achievements in directing, acting, singing, and variety performance.
