Bai Lu’s Northward Drama Sends China’s Telly Viewership Soaring

Bai Lu’s Drama Sends China’s Telly Viewership Soaring

Looks like telly time’s booming again in China — and it’s all thanks to a few cracking dramas and a bit of ultra-high-def sparkle.

The National Radio and Television Administration just dropped a fresh update confirming what fans already knew: shows like Northward are ruling the screens.

Turns out, in March 2025, more folks than ever were glued to their sofas, and TV viewership has shot up more than 10% compared to the same time last year.

That’s across dramas, news, documentaries — the whole lot.

But let’s be real, the real buzz is around Northward.

Starring the ever-stunning Bai Lu and the brilliant Ou Hao, it’s absolutely smashing it.

According to China Audio-Visual Big Data (CVB), the series has climbed all the way to second place among the most-watched shows since CVB even started keeping track. That’s no small feat!

Northward and other hit dramas are on the air one after another, and the national television ratings have grown strongly in March.

Northward premiered on CCTV1, with the first episode reaching a viewership of 4.019%, an average viewership of 3.615%, and 670 million viewers, ranking first in the prime-time TV series in March, and becoming the second-highest hit TV series in terms of viewership since China Audiovisual Big Data (CVB) began to conduct viewership statistics (since 2018).

So far, Northward has been broadcast on three TV channels, with a total of 850 million viewers on the big screen and a total viewing time of 390 million hours.

Good dramas entering good platforms and good time periods have further amplified their communication influence.

During the first round of Northward the average daily ratings of CCTV1's prime theater increased by 19.5% compared to before the broadcast, with a significant driving effect.

And it’s not just about the content — the tech side’s getting a glow-up too.

Beijing Satellite TV has started testing their 4K ultra-HD channel, and people are loving it.

Viewers are flocking in for that cinema-style experience right in their living rooms.

Word is, that crispy large-screen vibe is bringing in new fans every day.

All in all, March has been a big win for Chinese telly. B

etween strong storylines, A-list actors, and shiny new visuals, it’s no wonder the ratings are flying.

One thing’s clear — people are loving what they’re seeing, and they’re not switching off any time soon.
