Fiona Sit Opens Up: Khalil Fong’s Death Shook Me to the Core |
Fiona Sit has broken her silence, and it’s raw, honest, and heartbreaking. The Hong Kong singer recently opened up about the devastating loss of her close friend, Golden Melody Award winner Khalil Fong, who sadly passed away on 21 February — though fans and the public only learned of the tragedy on 1 March.
The delay in the announcement stunned many, but for Fiona, time hasn’t made it any easier.
In a rare and emotional interview with Chinese media outlet "人物" ("People"), she revealed the depth of her grief and the toll it’s taken on her mental and physical health.
“I was completely numb on day one. I cried, but it was like my body hadn’t caught up yet,” Fiona said. “Then day two hit... and I just broke.”
She described being physically overwhelmed – unable to eat, vomiting constantly, and even struggling to breathe.
“It reminded me of when I had depression over a decade ago,” she confessed.
“It was like being dragged back to that dark place all over again.”
Fiona Sit also opened up about a frightening night when she barely slept an hour, woke up crying uncontrollably, and found herself thinking: “Maybe if I stopped breathing, I wouldn’t have to care anymore.”
The moment was serious enough that she ended up buying a whole box of oxygen canisters just to cope. Doctors recommended medication, but she didn’t want to rely on pills.
As if her emotional pain wasn’t enough, Fiona faced backlash online after posting a nearly 2,000-word tribute to Khalil — which included announcing her upcoming concert. Some netizens accused her of using Khalil’s death as a promotional tool, sparking criticism she says cuts deeply.
“I didn’t post earlier because I was falling apart,” she explained.
“Grieving is personal. But the concert had been planned long before — I couldn’t postpone it. I’m trying to live well for both of us now, to honour what Khalil would have wanted.”
Her concert promoter also shared that Fiona had been crying so much after hearing the news that she became oxygen-deprived, relying on oxygen tanks to get through rehearsals.
On stage, when she sang “Suzhou River”, she completely broke down, choking back sobs and barely able to finish the song.
Despite the criticism, Fiona is staying strong — or at least trying to.
“I know people might not understand right now, but I hope they will. Time will show what our friendship meant,” she said.
Whatever people say, one thing’s clear: this isn’t just about a show. It’s about a friend lost too soon, and a woman doing her best to carry on.
