Namewee Accused of Copyright Violation Again |
Malaysian singer Namewee is back in hot water again – and yep, it’s all thanks to another April Fools’ prank that went a bit too far.
Last year, he ruffled feathers by faking his own death and even staging a “funeral” as part of a music video.
This year? Same stunt, just with more trouble on top.
On Tuesday, 1st April 2025, Namewee posted a rather realistic image on social media that appeared to show a segment from “8TV Mandarin News” reporting his death.
At a glance, it looked legit – with real news anchors Tan Chia Yong and Oscar Too in shot, the actual 8TV logo in the corner, and a headline saying something as bonkers as: “Exclusive: He’s Dead Again! Namewee Bitten to Death by Reporter.”
Mad, right?

While some netizens clocked the prank straight away, others weren’t impressed in the slightest.
Many pointed out how distasteful it was, especially since he pulled a similar stunt last year. What was meant to be a cheeky April Fools’ joke turned into a wave of backlash.
But it’s not just the internet that's fuming this time.
8TV Mandarin News quickly hit back with a firm statement, saying they never reported on his “death” and had no part in the image.

They also accused Namewee of copyright infringement and using the anchors’ portraits without permission.
The station was pretty clear: they respect creative freedom, but they draw the line at manipulating their designs and misinforming viewers.
They’ve handed the matter over to their legal team, hinting at possible legal action.
Namewee’s response?

He reckons he didn’t break any laws.
He claims the image was a “secondary creation”, not intended to profit or deceive, and insists no rights were violated.
Still, public opinion mostly sides with 8TV, with plenty saying he’s gone too far this time.
One blunt comment even said, “People who want to live can’t, and this guy keeps acting like he’s dead. Just stop wasting everyone’s time.”
As of now, there’s no word on whether 8TV will actually sue him, but the tension’s clearly not dying down anytime soon.
Whether Namewee genuinely thought it was funny or just likes stirring the pot, the outcome’s the same – more backlash, more drama, and possibly a courtroom visit in the near future.
