The Demon Hunter’s Romance Ending Leaves Fans Wanting a Season 2

The Demon Hunter’s Romance Ending Leaves Fans Wanting a Season 2
The Demon Hunter’s Romance Ends with a Bittersweet Goodbye

The curtains have officially closed on The Demon Hunter’s Romance, starring the ever-charming Allen Ren Jialun and the brilliant Lareina Song Zuer.

Considering the rocky road it had just getting on air, it’s been quite the pleasant surprise — a proper fantasy gem.

The two leads absolutely nailed it, with chemistry that had viewers glued to their screens, and a story that, while familiar, brought its own little magic into the world of xianxia romances.

Directed by Lam Yuk-fan (yes, the very same behind Eternal Love — a whole era for xianxia lovers!), The Demon Hunter’s Romance managed to win hearts despite the odds.

So it’s all the more frustrating that the ending left so many fans feeling a bit... robbed, to be honest.

After all, this wasn’t one of those tragic "doomed from the start" love stories.

We were right there — surely Xuanye and Banxia deserved a proper happy ending?

But no, instead we got a bittersweet farewell that left more than a few of us shouting at our screens.

To make matters worse, there are rumours flying about that the drama was meant to have a happy ending originally.

Word is that streaming giant iQIYI thought it was “too idealistic” and pushed for a more “realistic and impactful” open ending instead.

Realistic?

It’s a demon-human romance in a fantasy realm! Honestly, when will C-drama execs stop thinking every ending needs to hurt?

In the final stretch, Xuanye makes the heartbreaking choice to use the Chang Le Sword, wiping his existence from everyone’s memories.

Banxia, though, through the magic of a little talking shell, remembers everything. She runs to him — but their reunion is painfully short.

Xuanye confesses he never meant for them to be together again.

His duty to protect Wuyou Realm comes first, and Banxia’s human life is so short compared to his endless demon existence.

While Xuanye stays behind, Banxia builds her life in the human world, surrounded by family and friends, carrying the memory of him in her heart.

One last bittersweet night follows, where their old friends gather for laughter and joy, all blissfully unaware that someone is missing.

Only Banxia remembers.

Yet somehow, their bond remains unbroken — "Even if we are apart, we will grow old under the same moon, missing each other from afar."

Yeah, no shame in admitting I cried.

There is some comfort though: Xuanye finally gets the recognition he deserves from his estranged father, and there's closure of sorts before Xuanye quietly leaves through a river portal into another realm.

No big dramatic farewell — just a slow, painful fade.

Now, before you throw your remote in despair, there might be a silver lining.

Whispers are getting louder about a potential The Demon Hunter’s Romance Season 2.

Some insider gossip says it’s already being planned and could start filming early next year, with Ren Jialun and Song Zu’er reprising their roles.

Nothing’s been made official yet though, so best to keep expectations tempered.

Still, the show’s strong performance and the way it left certain mysteries hanging — like Banxia’s real identity — definitely leave room for more story.

Even better?

Both Ren Jialun and Song Zu’er have said during livestreams they’re keen to come back if given the chance.

And fans are pushing hard for either a second season or at least a special epilogue to give Xuanye and Banxia the ending they deserve.

Rumour has it, multiple versions of the finale were actually filmed — including a happy one — so maybe, just maybe, we’ll get a bit of that magic after all.

Crossing everything for it. Because if any couple deserves their forever, it’s Xuanye and Banxia.
